The Story:
Marketing Director Bill Piersol was looking for a concise, elegant reference that was also practical and informative. The design focused around the map spread, a special pull-out section that he envisioned being weighted down by glass of Stags’ Leap Petite Syrah while the map and the map legend provided ample material to tell stories about this historic property and its beautiful wines. The initial pages were designed to be brief and informative, presenting the information with classic typography befitting a property dating back to the 1890s.
Special Features: The pull-out map, which comes as a surprise toward the end of a classic booklet, was developed with illustrator Marsha Mello, whose beautiful pastel rendering of the Stags Leap Palisades became a focal point and a chance to condense the relevant details of the estate’s wine pedigree into almost haiku-like synopses.
Bonuses: Working with Piersol, a great mind with a dry sense of humor who understands Stags’ Leap and how it should be represented. He has been involved in the property since first coming to work for Carl Doumani, then-owner, in the late 1970s. Also, Olaf Beckmann’s photography, an inspiration and a pleasure for a typographer.
The Results: A classic, elegant brochure that can just as easily benefit aficionados of wine
